Downy
Downy is one of Procter & Gamble’s most established global fabric care brands, a household name in fabric softener and conditioner sold across more than 40 countries. Despite its recognition, the brand had struggled to penetrate new households, weighed down by on-pack complexity and a visual identity that no longer reflected the quality or modernity of the product.
Commissioned to set the vision and design principles for a full restage of the Downy brand, consumer goods packaging design, and brand identity work that began with a clear strategic insight: Downy enhances your laundry by doing what detergent alone cannot. From that foundation, a new holding device was developed to drive clear communication and create a distinctive visual asset that the brand had been lacking. A new logo was designed, more graphic, abstract, and energetic than its predecessor, with smoother curves and rounded letterforms that bring a gentler, more contemporary feel to the wordmark. Combined with a new, softer, and more graphic bloom, the updated lockup delivers a more modern identity that communicates both efficacy and approachability. The off-pack vision established a brand world in which Downy transforms fabrics to make them softer, fresher, and better, and in doing so, makes itself a laundry room essential.
