Picture: Kentucky

The Courier-Journal is Louisville’s newspaper of record, a publication with a photographic archive spanning nearly a century and comprising millions of images documenting the life, landscape, and history of Kentucky and the American South. The archive includes work by a staff whose coverage of the state earned the paper two Pulitzer Prizes: one for Feature Photography in 1976 for its documentation of the Louisville school busing crisis, and another for International Reporting in 1980. It is one of the most significant regional photographic archives in the United States. Picture: Kentucky is the second volume in the Courier-Journal’s two-book series, a companion to Picture: Muhammad Ali, and a broader portrait of the state through the eyes of the paper’s photographers. The book draws from decades of coverage to present Kentucky in all its complexity: the Kentucky Derby and the bluegrass, the coalfields and the river towns, the people and the places that define one of America’s most distinctive states.
