Studio Museum in Harlem

The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally, the first museum in the United States established expressly to collect, preserve, and interpret art created by Black artists and artists of the African diaspora. Founded in 1968 and led by Director and Chief Curator Thelma Golden, the Museum holds a permanent collection of approximately 2,000 works spanning painting, photography, sculpture, and mixed media, including work by Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, and James Van Der Zee.

de.MO collaborated with the Studio Museum across a range of publication design and editorial projects, museum catalogue design, exhibition publication design, and benefit invitation design that served the institution over multiple seasons. For the Museum’s permanent collection, de.MO designed Re:Collection, a book documenting the breadth and depth of the Studio Museum’s holdings. de.MO also designed Harlem: A Century in Images, published by Rizzoli in association with the Studio Museum in Harlem, a landmark volume documenting a century of life, culture, and art in one of the world’s most storied communities.
