UNFPA — FGM

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund and the world’s leading sexual and reproductive health agency, commissioned this exhibition to drive global awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM): a human rights violation affecting 200 million women and girls worldwide, with a further 68 million at risk by 2030. The exhibition opened at United Nations Headquarters in New York City before traveling internationally, timed to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on February 6th.

UNFPA’s brief was clear: put the women at the center. de.MO was commissioned to design the exhibition, human rights exhibition design work built around a positive, affirmative visual language around an issue that is too often communicated through fear alone. We developed a bold, colorful graphic identity rooted in the form of the subject itself, an assertive visual statement of empowerment. Large-scale portrait panels combined personal testimonies, photography, and video to create a dynamic and immersive exhibition environment, bringing individual stories and voices to the forefront of a global conversation.
